Make Budapest World Book Capital in 2023!
The Municipality of Budapest has submitted its application for UNESCO’s World Book Capital title for 2023 in a bid to be able to convey the message of freedom, responsible action and the power of community to the entire world through books.
2023 is the 150th birthday of the Capital, the year when Budapest celebrates the anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda, Óbuda and Margaret Island. Our aim is to have the book-related events staged under the umbrella of the “World Book Capital” be priority events of the festive series, organised around three key ideas: freedom, the protection of environmental assets and the strengthening of communities.
The highlight of the celebratory year – and of the World Book Capital events – will be the delivery of one of the city’s most important symbols, the Chain Bridge. This is the bridge that connects Pest and Buda creating a symbolic link between people, communicating a message of belonging together, of common values, of respect of a shared past and of responsible planning for a joint future.
Just as the bridge connects the city's residents, so does the love of books connect us, the people of Budapest with one another and with all people arriving from all corners of the world.
We have submitted our bid to be World Book Capital, and firmly believe that if awarded the title, Budapest will hold a highly successful series of events that represent a major development opportunity for all stakeholders of the book and literature industry and will focus great international attention on the importance of literacy and knowledge, and on books as the means of disseminating the notion of freedom, of increasing tolerance and promoting equal opportunities.
